ER
(1994-present) is one of the most popular dramas in television history.
Maura Tierney joined the cast of the NBC medical drama in 2000 as Abby Lockhart,
a nurse and med student, after having been introduced in a 1999 episode.
Maura Tierney has received an Emmy nomination and a TV Guide Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on ER.
ER airs on Thursday nights on NBC and extensively in syndication.
Maura
Tierney and her NewsRadio co-star Andy Dick lent their voices to Sammy (2000),
an animated series starring David Spade as Jamie Blake, a TV star whose deadbeat
dad (also Spade) drops back into his life. Maura Tierney played Jamie's assistant
Kathy Kelly. The show only aired twice on NBC before it was cancelled.
The
brilliantly funny sitcom NewsRadio
(1995-1999) was set in
the offices of the ficitional New York City radio station WNYX. Dave Foley led
the near-perfect comedic ensemble as news director Dave Nelson, and Maura Tierney
played his smart and ambitious co-worker (and on-and-off girlfriend) Lisa Miller.
Rounding out the cast were Stephen Root, Andy Dick, Vicki Lewis, Joe Rogan,
Khandi Alexander, and the late Phil Hartman. (Jon Lovitz joined the cast in
its final season).
While Lisa started off as the most normal person in the office, her neuroses and insecurities kept her from becoming too well-adjusted, and allowed Maura Tierney to make her a memorable and endearing character.
The first two seasons of NewsRadio are now available on DVD. Reruns currently air on the Biography Channel and in syndication (check your local listings).
704
Hauser (1994) was a spinoff
of the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, where that family's famous address
(704 Hauser Street) became home to The Cumberbatches, an African-American clan
where grumpy patriarch Ernie (John Amos) clashed constantly with ultra-conservative
son Goodie (T.E. Russell). Maura Tierney rounded out the cast as Goodie's Jewish,
hot-to-trot girlfriend Cherlyn Markowitz. Stubborn and outspoken, but not without
her insecurities, Cherlyn fit right in with the family. The series was cancelled
after only five episodes. During that time, Maura Tierney sat on a panel at
the Museum of Television and Radio in Los Angeles honouring the show's creator,
Norman Lear.
The
Van Dyke Show (1988) starred Barry Van Dyke as Matt Burgess, the manager
of a small, struggling regional theatre, and Dick Van Dyke as his father Dick
Burgess, a well-known actor who decides to settle down with Matt and his family.
Maura Tierney was part of the regular cast, playing Jillian Ryan, the theatre's
secretary and receptionist, and most importantly, Matt's self-proclaimed "right-hand
man." The show lasted less than two months on CBS and at least one episode
remains unaired.
