TV MOVIES

Out of Darkness (1994) (also known as The Clozapine Project) stars Diana Ross as Paulie Cooper, a schizophrenic woman who overcomes her mental illness with the help of the medication Clozapine, and the support of her family and friends.

Maura Tierney plays Meg, a fellow schizophrenic who does not experience the same good fortune as Paulie. Meg has an innocent and almost childlike demeanour that is coloured by the awareness of her illness. Maura Tierney is beautifully restrained in the role.

Flying Blind (1990) - Details soon.

Crossing the Mob (1988) stars Jason Bateman as Philly, a young con trying to get a foothold in the world of organized crime. While he hatches a plan to get the attention of the town's leading gangster (Frank Stallone), his former sweetheart, Michelle (Maura Tierney), arrives back in town to live with her tough-as-nails mother (Patti D'Arbanville) and brings with her the infant son that Philly never knew about.

Michelle is allowed a little more character development than her token girlfriend role would suggest, but it's still a very forgettable piece of work.

Student Exchange (1987) aired in two parts as a Magical World of Disney movie. Viveka Davis and Todd Field played Carol and Neil, a pair of Ivy League-bound best friends who are completely unnoticed by anyone but their parents. Sick of being loners, they decide to pose as a pair of foreign exchange students named Simone and Adriano for one semester, and succeed in becoming popular and desired. However, they also arouse the suspicions of Kathy Malpi (Maura Tierney), who is none too happy when Simone nabs her football player boyfriend and the lead role in the school's production of Sweet Charity.

The flick is harmless, predictable fun, and it's also notable for being Maura Tierney's first acting job, and one of her very few turns as a villain. She's fun to watch, playing up Kathy's cattiness and superficial charm.
